Once upon a time in the ocean of thought far far away there lived an cute idea. Actually it was such a small idea, that it was more like a funny notion. The ocean of thought is a dangerous place, as you might know. Especially if you are just a small funny notion. The ocean has currents and undertow and tsunamis and what not. But the worst are other bad, dangerous and radical ideas. A couple of centuries ago there actually lived a heretic idea that had said that the whole ocean of thought was made from animals and humans passing ideas along. And once animals or humans stopped doing that, that is when ideas die. That there was no heaven for good ideas. And that the way ideas come to existence is by mutation of older ideas and natural selection. Dangerous indeed. But these bad complicated ideas were overcome by bigger ideas and less complicated ideas until it was just a long forgotten myth. Ideas are not like DNA. Ideas don’t live because animals and humans passed them on to next generations. Ideas live because the idea gods love them. And every other idea should be considered a heresy.
The dangers posed to ideas made them travel in tight packs. No idea in his right mind wanted to be a heresy and exiled from the group of other ideas. In the group ideas relied on each other, so that when an older underlying idea dies, the framework still stands. Without these packs ideas cannot find another idea to mate with and will be forgotten. You don’t want to be a heresy or find your self all alone in the ocean of thought without a good reason.
So our funny notion gets up in the morning. It brushes it’s teeth and smokes its first cigarette. Then it puts on it’s clothes. Has a long look at the picture of his long lost love on the wall. Cries. And walks out the front door into the ocean of thought. Today like any other day our notion is trying to find a shoal of ideas. It longs to belong somewhere. But applying is hard work, you see. There are interviews, passing rites and ballotage even nepotism going on. And nobody is exactly looking for a funny notion. Central ideas are all the rage these days. If you are a funny notion you stand little or no chance. Particularly no if you are a funny notion that has been crying.
“Good morning” it says when it sits down. “good morning” says a voice from the dark. And continues “What are you about little notion, what can you contribute to our specific pack of ideas? All the ideas in our pack are about public policy making and we are proud of it”
“Well” says the funny notion, “I am all about doubling time. It is the time it takes stuff to double in size or value. With this can estimate size of tumor, sales and GDP per capita and so on. One has to divide roughly seventy by a constant growth rate to arrive at these numbers. For instance If Chinese GDP grows at a constant 7% percent each year it follows that every new generation is four times as rich as their parents. On average… ”
The voice in the dark booms “So exactly would that help other ideas along?!” and another voice yells “Where did the 70 come from, your mother? Does it apply in Africa too? Is this a Chinese idea? Because a lot of our ideas are about skepticism of foreign ideas. They smell funny, don’t you think? And those ideas cannot be loved by god are certainly not the way of our parents!”
Our little notion trembles. “I do not know where the 70 comes from, it has to do with the natural logarithms as far as I know. But I am not about that, and I am not Chinese. I am just trying…” But it gets interrupted. “What?!” “Logarithms!?, you are wasting our time. We will have nothing to do with your loggyboggy rythm stuff. We dance the jig in this pack of ideas. Go about you way!” And with that our little notion is out on the street again.

Here is a model. It is simpel. It is wrong, like any model. But it helps to understand a couple of things. Marketing communication has three different sides. The first is talking to the customer, advertising. The second is talking amongst the customers, word of mouth. Third is talking with the customer, customer care and sales. These three together produce the familiar s curve. The s curve shows sales as a percentage of the potential market over time. Before going into that, let me explain each side some more.
Talking to the customer is cheaper if you can address them all at once. Technologies like TV, radio and newspapers made it very cheap to reach potential customers. These technologies are known as media. It’s main purpose is to attract attention of whole segments for products and services. Mass psychology is used to create affection. Because the customer is not talking back companies conduct surveys to see how well they did. Media induced attention is called a hype. There is a lot of waste. Meaning it is reaching people that dont need or dont want to be reached. Collective memories about past advertising is called a brand. Design changes per campaign and formats are flexible.
Talking amongst the customer creates grassroot movements and fads. Since is it a mass sociology phenomenon there is little control over the message. But if we include not only word of mouth but word of eye (think fashion) into the equation the domino effect becomes clearer. Messages about preference tend to snowball in closely knit communities and have a very exponential effect. Trust levels are very high because recommendation by peers has a high impact. Helping people to have a conversation about your product helps getting referrals. Reputation are destroyed here so we might assumed they are build here as well. Design is nearly impossible.
Talking with the customer has no economies of scale. It requires people, but allows huge control over the message. This area is dominated by behavioural economics and it’s main focus is conversion and retention. Servicing the customer and helping them to make decisions the first time is called sales. It spreads a little beyond the customer as she talks about it with her peers. Since a one to one conversation takes place we need communication technologies or even physical meetings in stead of media technologies. Design is very stagnant and is called a corporate style guide.

Etc. Etc.
Daar moeten stickers voor komen. Zoals deze

Sharing an idea is actually called meme replication. A successful replicating meme (service, product, religion, idea) in a market has been shown to follow Frank Basses formula:

Here, Nt indicates the number of replicators at time t.

The three parameters of the model are:

m = the market potential; the total number of animals (consumers, apes, dolphins) who will eventually replicate. Geoffrey Moore believes that market should be redefined as a group of animals still referencing each other. Beyond that circle the market stops to be a market. That is a bit circular by nature I guess. But still, what is a market? Religion spreads as does drug use. Then again animals replicate to. So, define market for me, will you?

p= the coefficient of external influence; the likelihood that a potential, latent or reluctant replicator is converted because of mass media coverage (or other external factors). The advertising effect. The thing we marketeers all have to come know and love.

q = the coefficient of internal influence; the likelihood that a recplicator who is not yet will start using it because of imitation or “word-of-mouth” or other influence from existing replicators. The refertising effect. Fred Reicheld believed this could be estimated by asking human replicators explicitly about their intent, Hayes proved him wrong, but everybody still uses NPS. Seth Godin contents in Unleashing the ideavirus that success in marketing nearly always stems from the refertising effect, pointing out some underrated marketing tricks. I think he is almost clairvoyant to forecast that new technologies will help q more than p. Godins law should read somewhere along these lines: “Media innovations tends to become personal, therefore better replicating tools.”

So, I still have to write a book on where m ends, why p became overrated, and what q is exactly. 1970 Bass, 1980 Bonner, 1990 Geoffrey Moore, 2000 Seth Godin… Damn I need to hurry.

Alles blijft even slecht.
